Inspirational photographer

Lee Towndrow is a Canadian commercial and portrait photographer based in New York. His photographs branch out to having many ideas and being able to be questioned for hours without an answer.

The reason why i chose Lee Towndrow as my inspirational photographer is because i can stare at his photograph's for hours and still find hidden meanings and reasons to why he captured these image's.
this first one shows two men in the foreground smoking (most probally cannabis) and another old man in the background sitting on what appears to be a door step.
One idea i had to why he took this photo is that he captured this moment in time to show conflict between the media's perception, on how the media portray's teenagers, to being bad and doing drugs. Where as they portray old people, as being good and they do no drugs and no smoking. Another idea i have is to show culture, the three characters are wearing plain weared down clothes witch could be seen as poor clothing or cheap. This image is like a pause in there daily life routine. he also shows form very well usimg shadows creating a diagonal line slicing through the first two characters, the strange thing is that there heads are in the shadow but there body's are in the light. this is unorthodox as when someone capturing an image of someone would preferbally have there faces in the light and not so much there bodies.
theses are some other photographs that lee towndrow has captured.

Henri Cartier Bresson

Henri Bresson is a well known photographer around the world, he was born in france and is considered to be the father of modern photojournalism. He has produced many famous photographs, but the one i have chosen to analyse is Behind the Gare St. Lazare in Paris. i think this photograph is his most interesting one he has taken, because of the way he has used subject content and form and converged the three to create this spectacular image.
  • Content: in this photograph you can see that a man has propelled himself from a ladder that lies in the water. The figure of a leaping dancer on a pair of posters on a wall behind the man, mirrors him and his reflection in the water. The rippling circles made by the ladder echo circular bands of discarded metal debris. Beside the fencing there is a poster which appears to say "Railowsky" which i think is advertising a performer named Railowsky. the name "Railowsky" puns with the railway station and the ladder, which resembles a railroad track. Behind the character in mid air is a fence with sharp points at the tips, there is also three buildings one with what appears to have a clock on the top, also there is a man leaning against the fence (sillhouette).
  • Subject: i think this photograph is trying to show conflict between working men that can also have fun, as the man leaping off the ladder is resembling
  • Form: The lines of the of railings form an eye catching effect, also drawing your attention to the background of the photograph. In the background there is lines of the buildings which look like factories. Insinuating that the photograph is showing working class life. In the foreground of the photograph the man is blurred and out of focus wich creates a sense of mystery.

Photography project - With Sam ivermee and Steven feaver

The theme of the project is "Education" we were told to create a collage of our photographs, we decided to portray the idea of conformity in education.

We had to take photograph's to do with conflict, i used natural and man made objects.
i also chose this particular shot because not only does it show conflict between man made and natural elements, it also shows how they connect.
it shows how they connect because the ivy is intwining with the structure of the metal fence, which could show that maybe everything connects in someway.

The three elements...

Subject - is the theme of the photograph, what it stands for or what it means and makes you feel.

Content - is what we percieve of the photo, its what we can see exactly how it is. not what it means

Form - is the means which the subject and content are unified and presented.

List of the the elements that make the form:
  • Shape
  • Theme
  • Colour
  • Quality of light
  • Structure
  • Lines
  • Value
  • Texture
  • Space
  • Tone
  • Framing

What is Light ?

Light is a form of radiation, created by waves this is often called: EM radiation or electro magnetic radiation. A wavelength between approximately 400 nm and 700 nm is directly detected by the human eye and perceived as visible light. Other wavelengths, especially nearby infrared (longer than 700 nm) and ultraviolet (shorter than 400 nm) are also sometimes referred to as light, especially when visibility to humans is not relevant.
Electromagnetic radiation (often abbreviated E-M radiation or EMR) is a form of energy that is similar to wave-like behavior as it travels through space. EMR has both electric and magnetic field components, which oscillate in phase perpendicular to each other and perpendicular to the direction of energy propagation.

How does a photograph become a photograph?

On the old fashioned camera's (SLR) a photo is created through a chemical reaction made of silver halide crystals being exposed to light, silver halide crystals are a light sensitive chemical that changes colour and forms any image that is being projected onto it. the film in the camera is glazed with this light sensitive chemical. in the camera the film is directly behind the lens and shutter, so when the camera shutter opens it lets any light from the outside into the camera throug the lense and it hits the film at the back. (the duration the shutter is open for varies, considering on how powerful the light is outside, for example if you are taking a picture of the sun, the shutter only needs to be open for roughly half a milisecond, where as if you were taking a picture of a darkroom the shutter would have to stay open for a longer duration like 3 seconds.)

Once the SHC has captured the image, the film is secured in a complete blacked out capsule until ready for process and developing. at the developing stage, the film is taken out the capsule and is reverted from the negative, to make a positive image and a blown up image so its bigger and more visible to the naked eye.
